A practical mobile homepage check for small businesses
October 9, 2026A contact form is only useful when an enquiry reaches someone who can answer it. A “message sent” notice is one part of that journey. Here is a practical check you can run on your own business website.
1. Start as a visitor
Open the site while signed out of WordPress. Use your phone first, then a computer. Find the contact page through the normal menu rather than a saved admin link. Note any point where you have to hunt for the next step.
Tell the person who handles enquiries that you are about to send a test. Use an email address you control and a message such as “Website form test — please confirm receipt”. Do not put customer information in the test.
2. Check the form’s instructions
Can you tell what each field is for? Are required fields clear before you submit? Try leaving one required field blank, then correct it. A useful error should identify the problem and explain what to change.
The W3C guidance on form notifications recommends clear feedback for both errors and successful submissions. Check that the form confirms success in words, rather than relying only on a colour change.
3. Follow the message to the inbox
Send a valid test and record the time. Check the intended mailbox, including its junk folder. If your site keeps form entries, compare the stored entry with the email. These are separate checks: a saved entry does not prove the email arrived.
Open the notification and check that the sender’s name, address and message are readable. Use Reply and confirm that the reply is addressed to your test address. Send that reply and check that it arrives.
4. Record failures clearly
If something fails, save the page address, test time, device and exact error text. Send those details to the person who maintains the site. Ask them to check the form settings and mail delivery records. Avoid repeatedly changing settings without recording what changed.
5. Make the check repeatable
Keep a simple record: date, device, success message seen, enquiry received and reply received. Repeat the check after changes to the form, email setup or website. Choose a regular reminder that suits your business.
Passing this test confirms that one test enquiry completed the journey. It does not guarantee every future message will arrive, so keep an eye on the enquiry inbox and any delivery alerts.
